Boost YOUR Balance
Building & maintaining functional balance for everyday life

6 Week Programme (next programme starts 24 September 2025)

Until we start to lose our balance, we barely notice that it’s there at all. Did you used to be able to stand on one leg to put a shoe on and at some point you stopped doing that? Maybe you used to bound over styles and now it feels a little more effort to maintain control? Maybe you used to get out of the bath on to a slippery floor without thinking and now you need to hold on to something to steady yourself?

It’s easy to miss the decline in our balance, but it’s important to address this decrease, before it becomes serious. The loss of balance generally starts at 45 and once it begins to decrease, the process becomes a downward spiral. Often once we stop using it, an underlying fear (& sometimes frustration) takes hold, meaning we avoid it altogether. Studies have shown poor balance can be associated with serious health problems – as well as increased risks of falls as we get older. However, studies have also shown how regular balance training can help to slow this decline in our ability to balance. Why then do we not undertake balance training preventatively, before we experience a fall or injury? For some reason in our society today, we only place importance on balance training after we fall or injure ourselves. This is exactly what the Boost YOUR Balance Programme seeks to address.

What is the Boost YOUR Balance Programme all about?
A 6 week programme where the key aim is maintaining and building our functional balance - that is, balancing in EVERYDAY LIFE, not just holding an impressive balance pose in a yoga class! So… reaching on one foot to get something out of a high cupboard, getting in & out of the bath, climbing over a style - maintaining stability as we walk at pace or even run, particularly on an uneven surface. Every time we take a step we are balancing.

The programme differs from my usual yoga class - it is a mix of strength & resistance, foot health exercises, balancing & qigong-style movement. We focus on the physical body systems needed for balance, as well as the mind (balance can be massively affected by the state of our mind). The classes are surprisingly good fun, lots of wobbles & laughter!

The programme is suitable for anyone seeking to improve their balance -whether you've had a fall or an injury and want to rebuild strength & confidence, or you've noticed a general decline in balance subtly affecting your daily life and want to address this before it impacts more significantly. Lots of different options are given throughout the programme,
as everyone starts at different stages.

What's included in the Programme?

Boost YOUR Balance students & what they say about the programme...

"The Boost YOUR Balance programme has helped me walk with more confidence so I can stride out like I used to. I feel more upright and am able to look up at the world rather than worrying where my feet are quite so much. My balance has improved, especially when challenged by a surprise event. I now have a selection of exercises and ideas to enable me to continue improving my balance."

"The teaching style was perfectly judged, supportive and encouraging. Everyone was delightful and it was a happy and positive experience. I learnt that just adding simple repetitive exercises can make a big difference to my overall balance, which is much improved. I am now more confident in my movements and more aware of the importance of maintaining my balance."

"Boost Your Balance is a very effective programme that does what it says on the tin. It is a well-planned and well-executed programme delivered by yoga teacher, Jane. She makes the sessions inclusive and fun and adapts the tasks to ensure each person is making progress from their starting point. The follow-up emails and video links means you can put as little or as much time as you have to improve your balance. I particularly made use of the incidental life tasks to incorporate balance practice in my day to day life e.g. brushing my teeth on one leg with a beanbag on my head-who knew that was a thing? I have no hesitation in recommending this course to others."

"It was a very relaxed class so no pressure - I could work at my own pace. Jane always had various options to enable us to do the exercise at our own level. She is very encouraging and gently got the best out of us. Having one life training exercise to focus on each week was great and has given me lots of tips and ideas to continue the balance work. The group were great fun and we had lots of laughs. I liked the videos in support of the class as they reminded me of things I had forgotten and one of them particularly (the flowing movement) was great to go back to until it came naturally. I liked filling in the sheets each week because I can see how far I have come but by the same token I know that how you feel on the day can affect your balance so I know if I seem to go backwards at class, consider how I may have been better at home when more relaxed."

"Having completed and thoroughly enjoyed this programme I now understand the importance of working on my ability to balance and that it is never too late for any of us to make a start on improving our balance. By practising the Daily 5 Exercises regularly I am now much stronger, with better stability, that I can do heel lifts whilst balancing on one leg. I certainly could not achieve that at the start of the programme. Thank you Jane for delivering such a great programme and for your support and encouragement throughout the six weeks."
